Causes of chronic pelvic pain

Any organ in the pelvis could be the source of pelvic pain. Accordingly pain could be gynaecological, urological, colo-rectal or muscular in origin. However the most common causes in clinical practice are:

  1. endometriosis
  2. interstitial cystitis
  3. irritable bowel syndrome

Pain could start in one organ or system and convert to another site. This is why chronic pelvic pain is usually multifactorial and we have to investigate for more than one cause.
