- Endometriosis indicates growth of endometrial tissues outside the the uterine cavity.
It affects about 10% of all women and 30-40% of infertile patients
- About 40-60% of women with endometriosis present with pelvic pain
- Painful periods, painful intercourse and abnormal uterine bleeding are also common
- The magnitude of pain does not reflect the severity of the disease
- It could affect fertility by chemical and mechanical means at different stages
- Other close family members are 8 times at risk of developing the disease
- Teenage girls are not immune and parents should not forget this point
- 20% of patients develop endometiomas so their absence does not exclude the diagnosis
- Other parts of the pelvis are affected in >90% of the patients with endometriomas
- Migraine, general fatigue, recurrent thrush and thyroid dysfunction are associated problems
- Definitive diagnosis of the disease is by laparoscopy and biopsy of the suspected lesions
