• Endometriosis indicates growth of endometrial tissues outside the the uterine cavity.
  • It affects about 10% of all women and 30-40% of infertile patients
  • About 40-60% of women with endometriosis present with pelvic pain
  • Painful periods, painful intercourse and abnormal uterine bleeding are also common 
  • The magnitude of pain does not reflect the severity of the disease
  • It could affect fertility by chemical and mechanical means at different stages
  • Other close family members are 8 times at risk of developing the disease
  • Teenage girls are not immune and parents should not forget this point 
  • 20% of patients develop endometiomas so their absence does not exclude the diagnosis
  • Other parts of the pelvis are affected in >90% of the patients with endometriomas
  • Migraine, general fatigue, recurrent thrush and thyroid dysfunction are associated problems
  • Definitive diagnosis of the disease is  by laparoscopy and biopsy of the suspected lesions
