- Irritable bowel syndrome is a functional disorder of the bowel
- Usually there is no specific bowel pathology involved
- It is characterised by pain, constipation or diarrhoea, bloating and urgency
- Pain is usually relieved after motions but sometimes patients might have a sensation of incomplete emptying of the bowels.
- Symptoms could aggravate before and during menstruation
- Not associated with any rectal bleeding or any constitutional symptoms
- Usually there is no pain or need to open bowels at night
- Does not start after the age of 40 years
- Could be associated with endometriosis and or interstitial cystitis
