Pain is defined by the International Association for the Study of Pain as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage. It is a subjective feeling, and there are no means of verifying its existance, or assessing its intensity. It is described as pelvic when it is felt in the true pelvis, lower abdomen below the umbilicus or lower back. It is also described as acute or chronic according to the following characteristics:
Acute pain is a defensive natural mechanism following real or potential tissue damage. It is of short duration, and usually settles by the time of tissue healing.
Chronic pain on the other hand , serves no purpose and is considered as a disease by itself. The pelvic type is diagosed when pain persisted for 6 months or more, and could be related to gynaecological, urological, intestinal, musculoskeletal or pshycological causes. Accordingly its management should involve a team of specialists in these different areas who work together using tested protocols and procedures to deal with this problem.
